About THE ARTIST...
I am a Welsh artist, with a passion for painting seascapes and still life, this has come from living on the North Wales coast, basically I paint life from life.
My practice is formed from sketching, painting en plein air and also more focused still life pieces from my studio in Old Colwyn.
Working and painting on location has always been my main focus, but it's all about the senses, I am painting my experience of a place. Whether I am on a local beach or wandering around the countryside, the first things I notice are important, I'm looking for drama, contrasts or silence, when something grabs my attention there's an internal reaction to a scene and I have to set up and paint my response to it.
My still life work has developed from my intense desire to push my skills and boundaries.
Finding a subject, which can be anything from shells found on my beach walks to fruit from the garden. Usually they are mundane objects that on closer inspection prove to have intense colours or mirror shapes in nature. I set them up in a daylight setting as the colours, reflections and shadows are far more inspiring than a flat light source, and when it comes to painting the subject I have to be quick and responsive as the light changes so quickly.
